I often say, "The more sure you are that you are right, the more likely you are to be wrong."
A person who is sure they are right no longer gathers information and evaluates it (if they ever did in the first place).
Some people need to pick a side, be a part of the 'team', defend that team, more than they need to comprehend the bigger picture, and see it from all sides.
No, I hadn't seen this Ted Talk. But it does an excellent job of illustrating the difference between those who desire the truth, and those create their own truth based on their own prejudices. (And who doesn't believe that their prejudices aren't GOOD prejudices?)
I often think of the Salem witch trials. Very learned people, along with just folks, convinced themselves that there were witches. And, as is usually the case, their investigations were really just rationalizations.
We like to think, with college education and such, that we have advanced beyond that. We have not.

Your comments about defending your team versus comprehending the bigger picture remind me a lot of Julia Galef’s “Soldier vs. Scout” metaphor!
