Live: Andrew Rotherham, Eduwonk

Layoffs at the Department of Education, Linda McMahon, and the future of schooling

Last night we recorded our first Substack Live event, hosted by founder and CEO Alex Grodd.

Andrew Rotherham of Eduwonk joined us to talk about the recent layoffs at the Department of Education, Linda McMahon, the new department secretary, and the future of research, testing, and AI in schools.

Andy was the perfect person to help us navigate all of the events surrounding the Department of Education and President Trump’s broader education policy. We highly recommend his WBUR interview, Inside the Effort to Dismantle the Department of Education.

Thank you to our community members, including previous podcast guests Shaka Mitchell and Benjamin Riley for asking such thought-provoking questions.

Should the Department of Education be abolished?

This is a highly topical debate. President Trump campaigned on a pledge to dismantle the DOE and has already made sweeping cuts to its research arm, the Institute of Education Sciences (IES).
